The Evacuees Reunion Association was founded in 1996 to ensure that the true story of the evacuation would become better known and recorded for future generations. It is a non profit making registered charity and has its origin in the 50th Anniversary World War Two in 1995 when a few evacuees wearing what has become their distinctive emblem ( a tied on luggage label) took part in a great parade in London. This organisation is mainly funded and managed by its members, but has received financial help for its educational work from the Heritage Lottery Fund and also for its involvement in the 2005 ‘Home Front Recall’ programme, from the Big Lottery Fund.
It publishes a popular monthly magazine/newsletter entitled ‘The Evacuee’ distributed free of charge to ERA members all over the world. Its ‘Lost Touch’column has helped hundreds of people to trace old friends.
The ERA organises many reunion meetings. Some are very large and attract many thousands of people, but others are much smaller, held in the churches and halls of villages that cared for evacuees.
